Gorgeous, but hoooo boy the sifter...Gorgeous, but hoooo boy the sifter...

Full transparency: I'm a coffee nerd, not a matcha person. But as a coffee nerd I'm very familiar with Fellow. I own a bunch of their drinkware and it's fabulous, consistently well made stuff. So I was eager to check this set out.The quality definitely lives up to the Fellow name. This set is beautifully made: top-notch packaging, sleek & stylish aesthetic throughout. The ceramic bowl with pour spout, the whisk stand, and the display tray are all ceramic and lovely, and the matte black finish matches my existing set of Fellow coffee mugs and cups perfectly, which is nice. Purely from a visual standpoint, this thing looks incredible sitting on the shelf in my kitchen.Since matcha isn't my thing, I gifted this to my 14yo daughter, who is very into it. She was absolutely floored! It's clearly a premium set and she was over the moon when I gave it to her!At $130 this is premium pricing, and it's certainly a premium set. I think the value is largely there. The ceramic pieces are beautiful and the stainless steel spoon and sifter feels appropriately high-end.Now, regarding that sifter, and it comes directly from my daughter's actual use (and consistent with feedback from others here): the sifter looks cool but functionally is terrible. It's not wire mesh and it clogged very easily. My daughter has gone back to using the simple small tea strainer she was using before. For a $130 set, having one component that gets set aside in favor of a cheap alternative is a real disappointment, and it genuinely detracts from the experience.I'd give this 3.5 stars if that were an option. Beautiful set, excellent craftsmanship on most components, but that sifter is a miss that keeps it from being the complete package it should be at this price.

Amazing set

Love this set, looks so clean and sleek. Great quality, easy to clean, easy to use, and fits perfectly into my coffee bar. Fellow doesn’t miss. Some may want to source other things for the absolute best matcha producing set. I bought this to make matcha at home for my wife and it’s exactly what I was looking for. Something clean and aesthetic, but pretty effective at making matcha.

Stylish, Minimalist Modern Matcha Tea SetStylish, Minimalist Modern Matcha Tea Set

I collect and treasure Matcha Tea Sets. I learned of the Japanese Tea Ceremony many years ago when living in Japan. I had the honor of being invited to watch and sometimes be a recipient of the tea at a ceremony. If you receive the tea, you are trained ahead of time on how to receive it, drink it, and return the cup. Most sets differ in their designs, materials, and included items. This set has a much higher price tag than most, and I wanted to know if there were large enough differences to justify it.The set arrived in the heaviest cardboard box and dividers that I think I’ve ever encountered. It looked about the same as normal cardboard. It was just sturdier. The box that held the set only had a line drawing of it and some text. The set has an understated modern elegance. The heavy ceramic pieces (the bowl, whisk holder, and tray) are made from a premium clay. The bowl, like most matcha bowls, has a spout. This is the first set I’ve seen or owned with a ceramic tray. It has special indents for your bowl, whisk holder, and spoon. It has silicone feet. The ceramic pieces are microwave safe. Most sets that include an item on which to place your pieces also include a small, decorated mat, sometimes called a tea towel. It isn’t shaped or made the way that what we call tea towels are.The matcha scoop and strainer are stainless steel. All of my other sets have one or two bamboo scoops or spoons and a differently designed strainer. I really like the modern look of this strainer, but regretfully, it doesn’t work that well. Most of the tea is strained, but some gets stuck in the holes. You can try pushing it through with your finger, or just rinse it later. The stainless steel and ceramic pieces can be washed by hand or put in the dishwasher. The most traditional item is the bamboo whisk. I didn’t count, but I don’t think this one has as many prongs as the ones in my other sets. Before you use it for the first time, soak the tips in warm water for a few minutes to make them flexible. This helps to keep them from breaking. To clean it right after use, rinse it in warm water and swirl it to remove any matcha still on it. Do not use soap as the bamboo might absorb it, which would affect the flavor. Then put it on the stand to air-dry and help it keep its shape.Currently, this set is available in four colors: matte black, hazy blue, dusty rose, and matte white. The bowl in the white set looks translucent. One of my pictures shows sakura (cherry blossoms) in matcha. The company that designed this set, Fellow, Industries, Inc., is based in San Francisco. It says they design and make products but doesn’t clearly state that this set is made in America.

Nice aesthetic, but is it worth the price?

Amazing, maybe a little pricey, there’s nothing special about it besides it looking good
