⭐ Key Features
•✅ Product Details - Size: 39.4" x 78.7". Structure: Outer fabric = mesh Igusa, middle layer = EPE 3/8", bottom = 100% polyester (non-slip), not washable. Crafted with traditional igusa techniques, this mattress functions beautifully as a tatami bed and brings the gentle comfort of japanese tatami into modern homes. It also works as a supportive base layer for a japanese floor mattress. The foldable design allows it to fit a tatami mat twin layout and pair comfortably with a twin xl mattress. Made with natural rush grass, commonly used in tatami mats and Japanese-style rugs.
•✅ Moisture Control & Air Purification - Igusa naturally absorbs moisture, sweat, and odors, helping keep the air clean and comfortable. It releases moisture when the air is dry, providing excellent humidity control. With 2.5 times the moisture absorption of cotton, igusa also helps reduce indoor pollutants—ideal for creating a refreshing tatami floor mat environment.
•✅ Works Perfectly With a Futon - Designed for those who prefer sleeping close to the floor, this mat offers comfortable cushioning and works well beneath a japanese floor mattress. The 9mm polyethylene foam helps soften noise, making it excellent for apartment living. It can also be used as a compact accent piece similar to a twin tatami mat or as a small tatami rug depending on your room layout.
•✅ Easy to Store & Maintain - Lightweight and foldable into five sections for easy moving and compact storage. When not in use, it can be folded and placed against a wall or stored neatly—ideal for maximizing space. Maintenance is simple: just air-dry in the shade. During humid seasons, dry regularly in a ventilated area to prevent moisture buildup in the igusa.
•✅ Experience a Traditional Japanese Sleep Environment - A quality futon combined with a tatami mat creates a calm and restorative sleep space. Tatami brings a soothing, nature-inspired atmosphere to your home. Enjoy an authentic Japanese-style setup offered by BJDesign, using a tatami bed, futon, and natural rush materials for a peaceful and refreshing bedroom experience.
•✅ Note on Natural Igusa Aroma - New igusa (rush grass) products have a distinctive, natural scent. Many people in Japan are familiar with and enjoy this traditional tatami aroma; however, those using tatami products for the first time may find the scent noticeable at first. If the aroma feels strong, we recommend airing the mat in a well-ventilated room and allowing it to dry in the shade for several days, which can help soften and reduce the scent over time.

I’m really happy with this tatami mat. The EPE core feels nice and firm, which makes it great for sleeping on a hard surface without feeling uncomfortable. The igusa mesh is breathable and has that fresh, natural smell that makes it feel really authentic. I also like that it’s easy to fold up and move around, so storing it or changing how I use it is simple. It’s thick enough to help block the cold from the floor too, which makes a big difference. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it if you want something comfortable, practical, and well made.
I love this mat and it smells like nature just came into your space to clean up the unnatural toxins. Beautify and comfortable and well worth the investment for health's sake.
Decent budget tatami but don’t expect high end item at this price point. Photos show very thin foldable tatami for this listing compared to my traditional tatami and second photo is side by side of weave. If you are on a budget this would be acceptable otherwise I would recommend going through a Japanese import store to get both quality. I was judgmental of reviews that spoke of the scent of this mat given that it is made of woven grass. That said, it does not quite have the same natural scent of my larger tatami and would recommend only to use in rooms with windows that open to air out. May be better once it airs a bit in a few months but definitely not the same nostalgic scent of my sturdier, non-folding tatami that I paid 5x the price for.
